Travel Insurance for residents of the UK

(Residents of US/Canada | Resident elsewhere)

Check the policy details carefully before you buy, and ensure it meets your needs. See our blog's article on insurance pitfalls.

1. Insurance Price Comparison:

We intend to provide the best price comparison for your holiday insurance needs, so we had a good look at the available search engines. Our Travelchimps blog has published this research as a review of UK Travel Insurance price comparison sites.

Our recommendations: Moneysupermarket.com or USwitch.Com.

The review is an interesting read: Confused, Comparethemarket, GoCompare, uSwitch, and TescoCompare all gave the same results; because they use the same company to search for quotes. However; there are alternatives.

We hope to replace this page with the same search engine used by one of our recommended travel insurance comparison sites.

2. Gap-Year/Backpackers:

Should also check out insurance offered by World Nomads and STA. These are not listed by the comparison sites

WorldNomads is recommended by Lonely Planet; and when we checked, offered "gap-year" policies for people up to the age of 60 (most companies require you to be much younger).

When we checked the US market we found that most companies policies including Worldnomad's US policy only offered cover for a vacation of 6 months or less, but STA offered policies for up to 2 years. The UK is better served, but you may find STA offers a policy not available from other sites.

We have chosen to affiliate with World Nomads.

3. Older travellers and those with "pre-existing" medical conditions:

Unfortunately if you are in this category you will know that single and multi-trip travel insurance can be expensive and hard to find. However these companies may be able to help:

  • Saga Single and multi trip for the over 50s.
  • Age UK ageuk (charity created by the merger of Age Concern and Help the Aged).
  • Columbus Direct Single Trip (no upper age); Annual (up to age 74).

  • Free Spirit travel policies for those with medical conditions.
  • World First A specialist that offers travel insurance up to age 100, for those with medical conditions, and older gap year travellers.
